A PROCLAMATION
in honor of
The VETERANS of FOREIGN WARS
WHEREAS, the Veterans of Foreign Wars' rich tradition of "honoring the dead by helping the living" spans the entire 20th century; and their gifts to the nation include three generations of GI Bills, millions of dollars in college scholarships, and the preservation in the national memory of the noble service and sacrifice of our veterans;
WHEREAS, the VFW encourages us to remember that freedom is not free, its cost is great: lives altered, cut tragically short, loved ones bereft;
WHEREAS, the VFW reminds us of our debt to the courage of those who have, in Thucydides' words, "a clear vision of what lies ahead and yet go out to meet it" and of our opportunity to honor that debt by dedicating ourselves to the great, ongoing task set forth by Abraham Lincoln: ensuring that "government of the people. . .by the people. . .for the people. . . shall not perish from the earth";
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Doyle, Chair of Livingston City Commission,
do hereby proclaim
June 15, 2000, as
Veterans of Foreign Wars Day
in the City of Livingston and I ask my fellow citizens to join me in saluting all who have so valiantly served the cause of freedom.
IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and
caused to be affixed the seal of the City of Livingston.
Mike Doyle
